Sadness and satisfaction mark charity cycle ride

Two Newbury cyclists raise more than £5000 for REGAIN

15 December 2005

Returning from their African cycling adventure, Liz Chandler and Jon Williams have raised more than £5000 for Regain, the charity that helps enable people who have become paraplegic through sport to regain independence.

Sadly Liz had to return early to the UK to be by the bedside of her dangerously-ill father after only two cycling days, but her partner Jon Williams was able to stay to complete the arduous 400 kilometre trip across the Great African Rift Valley.

“My sponsors have been true to the sporting spirit,” said Liz Chandler, well-known co-owner of Natures Corner. “Even though I felt I had to return to be with my father who was very seriously ill, all my sponsors, many of whom were Natures Corner shoppers, agreed to give donations as if I had completed my ride. And I’m delighted to report that my father is steadily recovering.”

“The trip was exhilarating,” said Jon Williams. “We crossed the equator at least twice – possibly more as a result of some wobbly steering. Our third day stage was not the longest, but certainly the most arduous. First we dropped 3000 feet to the bottom of the Rift Valley, but then we had to climb almost 4,000 feet up the other side! I achieved my personal goal and rode every inch of the way -– sometimes very slowly. But the best thing was that everyone, including all the disabled riders, completed the stage.”

Already Liz and Jon are planning their next challenge for REGAIN – somewhere in China.

Regain is a charity (Registered Charity Number 1030693) dedicated to improving the independence of British men and women who have become paraplegic or tetraplegic (sometimes referred to as quadriplegic) as a result of a competitive sports injury. Money is available for potential Regainers to help provide them with the specialist equipment they need to enable them to achieve greater independence and improve their quality of life.
