Almost half of West Berkshire’s population is likely to have a food intolerance

Natures Corner offers tastings, tests and consultations during Food Intolerance Week

16 January 2006

Around 45% of the population suffer some kind of adverse reaction to food, according to Allergy UK. So, Natures Corner, Newbury’s largest healthfood store, is taking part in this year’s Food Intolerance Week which runs from 23-28 January 2006.

“Lots of people suffer from food intolerance to ingredients such as wheat, dairy, eggs, and gluten,” explained Liz Chandler, co-owner of Natures Corner. “Many of our customers come to us seeking out substitute foods that agree with them and ensure that they don’t miss out on essential dietary needs. With our special displays and promotions during Food Intolerance week, we aim to raise awareness of the difference between food intolerances and food allergies and to show ways in which people can manage their food intolerance.”

According to Allergy UK, food intolerances affect nearly half of the population and have been linked with chronic illnesses including asthma, eczema, migraines and irritable bowel syndrome, but as reactions to the offending foods can occur from two hours or several days after ingestion they can be difficult to identify. Usually more than one food is involved.

In contrast, food allergies affect 2% of the population. Symptoms can be serious and in some cases life threatening. These include swelling of the lips or throat, sudden and violent skin rashes, vomiting or sudden asthmatic breathing or anaphylaxis. If a classical food allergy is suspected you must consult your GP.

Throughout Food Intolerance week, Natures Corner will be offering tastings, testings and consultations.

Tastings include:
Plamil carob bars (caffiene free)
Plamil mayonnaise (dairy free)
Natural Cereal bars (gluten free/no added sugar)

Nairns oatcakes and biscuits (wheat free)
