Respiratory System

The respiratory system enables oxygen from the air to be taken into the bloodstream to provide the energy the body needs to function. As we breathe, air is filtered by the nose, then travels via the windpipe (trachea) and bronchial tubes to the lungs, into millions of tiny sacs. Oxygen passes through the thin sac walls into the blood, in exchange for carbon dioxide, a waste product, which is breathed out. Mucus may collect in little-used parts of the lungs, encouraging bacteria to grow. In urban areas the air is often laden with chemicals from industry and traffic, placing a strain on the respiratory mucous membranes' defences.

In complementary medicine, treatment aims to reduce the intake of pollutants and allergens, and lessen their effects on the lungs. Building up the immune system helps the body resist attack by micro-organisms inhaled through the nose and mouth.
