Immune System

The majority of us don't give much thought to our immune system until something goes wrong. However, during the winter months in particular, our bodies are constantly being confronted with bacteria, viruses and allergens.

The ability to fight off infection depends upon the strength of the immune system, which consists of an army of special cells to deal with foreign invaders. Prevention is better than cure, and there are many nutrients and herbs which can help build up the body's reserves.

Vitamin A is important for preventing viruses from entering the cells and fighting upper respiratory tract infections. Vitamin C is anti-viral and anti-bacterial, and a deficiency leads to frequent colds and minor infections.

Zinc is critical for immune cell production, and low intakes of Selenium are associated with a compromised immune response and the appearance of new strains of viruses.

Herbal tonics work to help stimulate the body's natural resistance. Garlic enhances the immune system and resistance to viral and bacterial infections. Studies on Echinacea suggest it may be one of the more effective antiviral compounds that is also safe to use at therapeutic dosage levels.

Lysine is an important amino acid which is often in short supply when the body is under stress, and is of particular importance for those prone to cold sores.
